Edward Spoon Hands: Are we a Culture of Theft?

TL;DR: We download / steal unavailable content not because it is the best content, but because we have to work for it and only a small number of people will do that work. For that reason, we can use that as a test with which to define our…
Hank, I think you have a good point, but I also think you are thinking about this way too hard. There a simple reason for why I streamed Sherlock illegally: I wanted more and I was simply too impatient to wait for it to be available in the US.
I’m a late Sherlock fan, not having even known it existed until a month ago. I watched the first season on Netflix and when I learned that it wasn’t available in the US, I resolved to wait because I already illegally stream Doctor Who and I didn’t want to add to my sins.
Plus, it’s really hard to find quality videos to stream.
That lasted about 2 hours before I just opened a new tab and searched for the first episode of the second season.
It really isn’t about having to search for something and to work toward getting what I want. It’s all about the fact that I just didn’t feel like waiting however long I was going to have to wait for it to be available to me legally.
I don’t just do this with UK shows. I’ve streamed The Walking Dead, The Mentalist, and even Phineas and Ferb. It has never been about the search. It has always been because I’m an impatient, spoiled little brat that doesn’t seem to care that what I’m doing is frowned upon by the government and my church and people like John who actually follow those rules.
